The Next Generation of Gaming: Leaked Dimensions and Features of the Nintendo Switch 2
Last Friday, we brought you leaked dimensions of the next Nintendo Switch from a seemingly reliable source. The dimensions were obtained from a ‘3D scan of the actual hardware’ provided by case manufacturer Dbrand. However, case manufacturers aren’t the only source of leaks. A Redditor named NextHandheld claims to have seen and touched an actual final retail unit of the Nintendo Switch 2.
A Conversation with NextHandheld
I spoke with NextHandheld, and after hearing their account, I’m convinced that they might be legit. Their claims include two photos of a possible Nintendo Switch 2 dock and one photo of the inside of a possible Switch 2 controller rail, which includes certification logos and copper contacts exposed.
The Dock: A Closer Look
One notable aspect of the leaked dock is that it doesn’t seem to have any more ports than the original. However, this might be misleading. NextHandheld mentions that the dock may have a different trick up its sleeve. The photo of the dock shows the same logo as the original Nintendo Switch, but with a ‘2’ attached.
Magnetic Controllers: A Game-Changer
NextHandheld claims that the Nintendo Switch 2 will feature magnetic controllers with drift-resistant joysticks. This is not entirely surprising, given a report from Spanish pub Vandal in April, which stated that Nintendo might replace the Switch’s controller rails with magnets to make it easier to snap Joy-Con controllers into place.
The Benefits of Magnetic Controllers
The photo shared by NextHandheld shows a joystick rail region without any visible rail. Instead, there is a 13-pin connector that sticks out to slot into the Joy-Con. According to NextHandheld, attaching the controllers will result in a physical magnetic click, and you’ll press a larger button on the controller to release.
The End of Joy-Con Drift?
Magnetic Hall effect joysticks are said to be used in the Nintendo Switch 2. These joysticks don’t contain the same deteriorating sensor material as traditional analog sticks and can be recalibrated easily, possibly putting an end to the infamous ‘Joy-Con Drift’ that plagues the original controllers.
A New Kickstand: U-Shaped and Beefy
NextHandheld shared a photo of the Nintendo Switch 2’s kickstand, which is reportedly a U-shaped rail. This design seems different from the original Switch’s gumstick kickstand and the Switch OLED’s flat plate. The U-shape might provide more stability and make it easier to prop up the console.
Extra Power When Docked?
There have been rumors of Nintendo releasing a Nintendo Switch Pro with 4K graphics when docked, thanks to Nvidia’s DLSS AI upscaling. Although this didn’t happen, NextHandheld claims that the Nintendo Switch 2’s dock might be designed to let the handheld run faster.
Differences in Power Ratings
The leaked photos show big feet around the back of the dock, which could indicate vents for airflow. This would ensure that the console doesn’t overheat if accidentally knocked over. The dock is reportedly rated for 60W, while the Switch 2 is rated for 45W, both of which are higher than the original.
The Many Things We Still Don’t Know
Although NextHandheld shares many details about the Nintendo Switch 2, there’s still much that remains unknown. Some questions include:
- Whether a Switch 2 can play original Switch cartridges or only digital Switch 1 games
- The presence of a microphone, camera, or storage space
- Performance and launch titles
- The reportedly 8-inch screen
Conclusion
NextHandheld’s account provides an exciting glimpse into the features of the Nintendo Switch 2. Although some details are still unclear, it seems that this new console will bring significant improvements to gaming on-the-go. If Nintendo does indeed announce the Switch 2 in January, we won’t have to wait long for more information or confirmation of these leaks.
Possible Launch Colors
NextHandhand says that the Nintendo Switch 2 will launch in dark grey, followed by a white model and one themed with a Nintendo game that hasn’t received a themed Switch yet.
